 Registered Behavior Technician

Starting January 1, 2026, the BACB requires that RBT applicants fulfill the criteria outlined in Task List 3. The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a certified professional in behavior analysis, working under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. **RBT Registration Requirements (Task List 3)** To register or renew as an RBT, you meet the following criteria:


1. **Age & Education** - Be at least 18 years of age - a high school diploma or equivalent 
2. **Background Check** - Successfully complete a criminal background check (within 180 days of application) 
3. **40-Hour RBT Training** - Must be approved by the BACB - Covers all Task List 3 content areas, including: Measurement - Assessment - Skill acquisition - Behavior reduction - Documentation & reporting - Professional conduct & scope of practice 
4. **Competency Assessment** - To conducted by a BCBA or BCaBA - Must utilize the official RBT Competency Assessment Form - Includes: - Direct observation - Interview - Role-play and skill demonstration 
5. **RBT Exam** - Administered by Pearson VUE - Consists of 85 multiple-choice questions (75 scored, 10 unscored) - Based entirely on Task List 3 
6. **Ongoing Supervision (Post-Certification)** - Minimum of 5% monthly supervision - At least 2 face-to-face contacts each month - Super must be documented and signed.
